ISSUE 2
The Balance Issue
Balance is rarely something we arrive at once and for all. It’s something we learn through the seasons of our lives — sometimes through intention, and sometimes through circumstances that invite us to slow down. This issue of Pause explores the many ways we can return to balance in our work, our bodies, and our daily rhythms.
Letter from the Editor
Dear beautiful reader,
Pause became a magazine for so many reasons.
The pull so many of us feel to slow down.
The ideas and modeling we need to actually do it.
The expert strategies that invite us into pause in all areas of life — from menopause, to the shift between seasons, to the quiet moments in our days that we often overlook.
This issue comes at a time when I’ve been living in my own deep pause. In mid-July, I had brain surgery. I planned for two weeks off to fully rest — mapping out in April how I could step back while still making sure our clients felt cared for. That plan stretched me, but it worked. I got the surgery, I paused, and I let my body begin to heal.
But what I didn’t anticipate was that the pause wouldn’t end when those two weeks were up. I no longer need to fully step away from work, but I do need far more moments of pause in my days. I pause to think about what truly matters in a workday — what’s essential and what can wait. I pause to consider what I want to eat and what my family needs to eat. I pause because I can’t yet drive, which means asking for help with groceries or ordering them ahead. I pause to map out the arc of a day so there’s room for naps, for breaks from the screen, for my body’s natural rhythm.
Pause and planning have always been in a dance for me — it’s why I started this magazine. And this season has shown me that dance at an even deeper level.
Now, as we step into fall, there’s a natural busyness and bustle in the air. It’s harvest season — a time of gathering, creating, and preparing for what’s next. But it’s also a season that asks us to grow and shift in alignment with who we are becoming.
So I ask myself…
How can I pause to make time to move my body?
How can I not only make soup, but pause to savor it?
What do I need to pause in my workday to make time for a podcast interview or to update my profiles?
I can’t pause time, but how can I connect more deeply with my kids — and honor my feelings about them leaving?
How can I remember to pause, breathe, and rest?
Think of reading this issue as a pause in your own day. Let the articles be loving nudges to pause what’s not serving you (or even pause enough to notice what those things are!) — and step into something different. Let them remind you to stop rushing and start receiving the life you’ve always wanted.
Because when we pause, we create space.
And in that space, life gets to meet us in beautiful ways.
With so much love,
Mia
